In many ways, Frostbreaker 28 was a huge success. The work of the player is easy just showing up and enjoying the time spent with team mates while playing many games of Ultimate. We sometimes forget to realize all the hard work that is spent to make each tournament not only happen but happen successfully for everyone involved. In the grand scheme of things, it starts months before the tournament ever takes place and lives on, at a level only Frostbreaker achieves, long after each tournament in the memories of everyone involved.
The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations, and new things. Using an idea from Worlds this year, Frostbreaker attempted to have each team present an MVP Award to the opposing team’s MVP. At first I thought the idea was crazy, but after watching the Semi Final match between Go Toyota and the Goonies I realized there was something much more to it. In a heartbreaking game that ended on universe 11-10, Toyota pulled out a stunning win against the defending champs. Many cried as the rain began to fall and Gainesville’s favorite was knocked out, but Dan simply stated “Goonies never cry” and everyone from both teams circled up. In a sport that is not driven by money or material things, I realized at that time that it is about bringing people together as Dan handed a MVP award to Toyota’s best player.
Bringing people together is what Frostbreaker is all about, and again at this years Frostbreaker it brought together many generations spanned across 20 teams. In the past, I have made winning a top priority but this year I tried to put winning aside and spend more time with friends who are leaving or socializing with people from other places and new faces. In a tournament that ended with many upsets and shocking places for new teams, this years Frostbreaker will go down in history with the rest: as the best tournament hosted in Gainesville, FL!

Gainesville’s annual Frostbreaker tournament kicks off tomorrow morning at 10 AM at Citizens field. It is one of the best tournaments of the year and with last nights rain the fields are going to be in great shape for tomorrow. In addition to new things added this year, MVP Awards presented by the opposing team and Spirit Games in between rounds, there are still the old flavors of the pre-party at Milans and lots of games for kids on the sidelines.
There are still many teams looking for other players to play so if you want play here’s your chance:

*** Update: Bill Bolin’s Pictures are up, Jim Martinez’s Pictures are up, and a word from TD Katelyn Cobelens***
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of organization required to run a successful hat tournament, but the FUEL ladies are pro’s. In thier 8th consecutive year of running the Fallout tournament, FUEL’s success can be measure in the pudding. This year marked a record of around 200 people split across 12 teams which gives an average team size of 16… AMAZING! This will help the FUEL team tremendously as they prepare to start traveling to tournaments, and they deserve it!
Although I was personally unable to attend this years Fallout, I was able to make it out to watch the Semi’s and the Finals which featured some fairly split teams. The first Semi’s game featured Kiwi’s vs. Safety First Orange. The Kiwi’s had a very nice roster which included Ashton, Johnny, and Michelle Fusting, but Orange was able to capitalize ear
ly with strong zone play in the cold and windy conditions. To make matters worse Jim Martinez had to leave the game early which led to a shortage of handlers for the Kiwi’s. The final was 13-7 and Orange moved on to the Finals. Semi’s number 2 featured the stacked Jade vs. Sapphire. Jade went up early and took half 7-5, but Sapphire would battle back and tie it 7′s as the hard cap sounded. Sapphire would then get the D and then punch it in for the score to land their Final’s opportunity.
The Final’s would feature Sapphire Blue vs Safety First Orange. The game started out neck and neck as Matt Deavenport and Dustin Travaglini would connect for the first 2 scores for Sapphire. Then Finley’s very own Wheels got in on the action as he connected for the score. Orange wasn’t done attacking with Fro Joe, TJ, Katelyn Cobelens, and Colin getting plenty of touches of the flatball. As fast as it came for Sapphire it left, Bennett started dropping things and the turnovers amounted in easy scores for Cathy Marshall and company. Then the hard cap sounded and it was 12-6 so game over Sapphire. Congrats Safety First.
