April Foolishness 2010

April 6th, 2010 Showkiller No comments

Fast becoming a RE-FUCT tradition, the April Fools Fest tournament hosted in Washington DC is one of the oldest tournaments founded/started by Eric Knudsen in 1978. The first tournament hosted 16 teams and was held on the Washington Monument grounds (complete with motorcycle cops riding through the games). Since then it has evolved to become one of the premiere tournaments in Ultimate. It is currently the longest consecutive running tournament in Ultimate (30 years and still going strong) and plays host to roughly 1,000 players and spectators each year.

In recent years, the tournament has featured such attractions as showcase games, a dunking tank, beer garden, pig roast, and other fun events. The spirit behind Fools has always been based on fun and competitive Ultimate. While the attraction to the tournament is a high level of play, they also want participants to be reminded of the livelihood that is the sport of Ultimate. That’s why you’ll continue to see a large variety of talent/skill levels amongst the teams that come to the tournament.

Congrats to the RE-FUCT boys as they took home the chumpionship against Xrates. Niners!!

2 Tourney's, 3 Champions

** Update:  Jackie Feil’s Player Review now posted

** Warm Up Pics up: http://gvilleultimate.com/photos?album=1&gallery=98

Gainesville and Tampa each hosted a tournament this past weekend. Tampa held it’s traditional Janus tournament which featured its signature Giants team made up of guys 6’2 and taller, and Gnomes team 5’8 and shorter.  At Janus in the Mens Division Gainesvilles Title Town was able to reclaim the Championship, and in the Womens Division the Gainesville Ladies team also came home Champions.  While some of us were at Janus, UF hosted its first tournament of the season Warm Up! here in Gainesville.  They crushed everyone they played and are once again Warm Up! Champions.

Here are some player reviews on the weekend:

Title Town by Philip Nassoiy: After much anticipation about going to Janus again this year, Title Town started off the tournament by losing their first game to the Drunken Sailors a team comprised of Tampa, Orlando, and Jax players.  Similar to last year it was again very windy on the fields and you could clearly tell the difference between veteran players and newbie players by looking the their throws.  Once we shook the rust off of throwing in the wind the next 2 games we crushed our opponents 11-7 and 11-3 respectively.  This qualified us to go in the power pool which took the top teams in each division and let them battle it out.  The top 2 teams from the power pool face in the finals.

FrisbeeThe next few articles will focus more on breaking down the UF 06 National Championship team.  This article was inspired by a letter to John Madden from Ethan Albright an offensive lineman for the Redskins.  The letter is enclosed below the ratings for the 06 team.   As a side note all rankings were used from here and in no way reflect the views of Gainesville Ultimate.  Enjoy!

2006 College Open Final Recap

October 16th, 2009 Showkiller No comments

To get us through the off season this year I thought I’d dig up some old articles from various sources about our little ultimate community and post them each week.  First up is an article about the ’06 National Champion team:

Open Final – Florida vs. Wisconsin Story by Joe Taris Images by Matt Lane

001Never before in the College Championships have two such dominant teams faced off for the title, with Florida and Wisconsin coming in with a combined record of 96 wins and 3 losses (2 of which were due to playing each other). The fast paced game began much as we may have expected, with Wisconsin putting it deep only two throws removed from the pull. Blame the slightly windier conditions, blame the adrenaline of being in the final, blame the Florida defense, whatever it was, Wisconsin’s deep game just wasn’t clicking the way it had on Friday and Saturday, allowing Florida to steal two breaks in the first four points to take a 3-1 lead. Regrouping after a timeout, Wisconsin adjusted, clearly making a deliberate effort to work the disc more underneath, which would help them successfully hold every offensive point for the rest of the half. Despite some deep misfires by Florida, they were able to successfully hold off Wisconsin’s defense, forcing the Hodags to trade points until half, which Florida took 8-6.

Wisconsin’s first opportunity came on the opening point of the second half, where an end 002zone drop opened the door for Wisconsin to score their first break to bring it back to 8-7. Wisconsin comes down on the following pull, clearly trying to continue the momentum generated by their recent break. Florida scores without much trouble, but Wisconsin manages to put together a run, first preserving a drive with a successful ‘Greatest’ followed by a score, then promptly running off two straight breaks to bring it back on serve 9-9. Hopes were high for Wisconsin as Teddy Tripoli was able to D a huck to Tim Gehret, but a costly throw wide of a Hodag receiver would give Florida the disc right back no more than 20 yards from their end zone. Florida would make short work of the short field, going up. This would be the story of the rest of the second half for Wisconsin, as they continued to force Florida turnovers but failed to convert the goals.
As Wisconsin’s Dan Heijmen would later put it, “[We] could definitely feel the momentum swinging, I thought we had it under control…we had a lot of chances, and they just did a really good job of not turning it over when they really had to.”

003Florida, in fact, would go on to convert every offensive point pushing the game to 12-11. Wisconsin is able to convert a marathon point to bring it back to 12-12 with a looping backhand from the brick mark to the back corner of the end zone. Florida responded quickly with a single pass possession, by way of Tim Gehret hucking straight over the top to Kurt Gibson for a goal, one of seven the pair would connect on for a goal today. Florida would go on to break twice to close out the Hodags, each time successfully defending Wisconsin’s hucks, each on goals thrown by Time Gehret to Kurt Gibson. Wisconsin’s last few attempts may have been an exercise in desperation as they felt their opportunities slipping away. In the end the Gehret-Gibson duo proved too strong for Wisconsin as Florida puts an exclamation point on a phenomenal season, with Championship finals victory, 15-12.
