Open Championship Recap by Andy Wade
CHAMPIONSHIP: Florida 15, Carleton 12
After throwing his tenth assist for the game-winning score in yet another dominant performance, Florida’s Brodie Smith fell to his knees, pointed to the sky and covered his head with his hands. Smith’s Florida team had won the 2010 USA Ultimate College Championships after a late surge to beat Carleton 15-12 in Monday’s open final.
Florida overcame a three-point second-half run by Carleton in a game marred by constant stoppages of play. One group of spectators counted 84 total calls, with several travels and marking fouls requiring observers to step in. Like he had all season, Smith paved the way for Florida with big Ds, quick handler movement and beautiful hucks, followed by roundhouse fist pumps and screams of ‘C’Mon!’
“I have no idea how we pulled that out,” Smith said after Florida’s celebration. “I think I blacked out in the second half.”
UF's ultimate Frisbee takes national championship by Clare Lennon
Squishy the Gerbil might be UF’s least-known mascot.
This is probably because Florida Ultimate’s A-Team just bought him on Friday as it began the USA Ultimate College Championships series in Madison, Wis.
Squishy brought good luck, as Florida defeated Carleton College 15-12 in the tournament finals Monday afternoon, giving the team the national championship.
National title goes unnoticed by Tom Green
Go ahead and add another national championship to Florida’s collection.
You might not know it, because the masses didn’t flood University Avenue on Monday afternoon, but that shouldn’t take away from what the UF men’s ultimate team accomplished in Madison, Wis.
Ultimate Frisbee is a niche sport – many college students are familiar with it, but not many sports fans follow it.
It doesn’t receive the glamorous attention of football or basketball. And it’s certainly not even on the same level as soccer – a sport that struggles to catch on with mainstream America – but ultimate combines elements of all of those sports and it requires just as much skill, endurance and hand-eye coordination.
Who are we… NATIONAL CHAMPS!
MADISON, WISC. — If there’s any question of how dedicated Carleton College is to ultimate, one needs to look no further than the gift every freshman receives (a free Frisbee) or the last time the team won a college ultimate championship (2009).
But tradition and a second seed at the 2010 USA Ultimate College Championships weren’t enough to hold off fourth-seeded Florida, who took this year’s crown with a 15-12 win in front of a packed house at Middleton High School in Madison.
The win capped off a tournament that began with 20 teams contending for the title, and a bracket that was good as destroyed after the second day of play when top-seed Oregon, third-seed Colorado and hometown heroes Wisconsin were eliminated.
