Congrats everyone for a great Summer!

Fall League is now open for sign up here: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/312743/fall-league-2010

Captain Reviews:

Despite the captain’s showing up just to see the opening pull, Gangrene started off with an organized and disciplined zone defense. Forest knew this game would be fought tooth and nail as the last time they faced Black they were demoralized by an 11-10 universe point come from behind win for Black. As the game continued Gangrene was able to grab a break and went up 4-2 early. However, Night Night Time refused to go to sleep and fought back just as they had a few weeks previously and took half 6-5. At a mirrored half, Gangrene knew what they had to do: keep the intensity on defense. Some errant decisions on offense allowed Black to extend their lead getting a D just as Gangrene was right on the goal line and then getting a callahan from RJ. Night Night time’s run seemed to be fueled by their ability to handle Gangrene’s zone so at 9-7 we decided to switch to man and run like a Gang gone wild. We got a quick break, and then another, and then another as Alan, Shiggins and Kern caught sick grabs all over the field with defenders all over them. Andy, Cynthia and Robert swung the disk like playing hot potato and found Nations, Feldman, Shiggins and Duckett’s sticky hands waiting in the middle. Facing 10-9 Black seemed a little stunned. Forest got the turn and worked it up the sideline for the win 11-9. I’ll also throw out there that while the opportunity to make this into a chippy game did occur, both teams displayed great spirit working through calls despite the stake of elimination hanging over their heads.

As darkness started to move in, Gangrene found out they were to face Navy again, completing the rematch of the season’s double header. Yet this time the Gang had the confidence of a solid wind at their backs and felt that their man defense could dominate any team. Navy was missing a few players and from early on nothing seemed to go their way as Travis’s vocal sideline support and some rash decisions took their toll. Carrie caught a crazy I/O break laser through the stack and no one could handle Shiggins, Cynthia and Robert’s air assault into the waiting hands of Greg, Rob Kern and Cari. Forest took half 6-1 and never looked back, smelling the wafting scent of shiny new plastic. Despite a few good plays by Colin and Frojo, the momentum was strong and the Gang’s middlemen of Greg and Nations had figured out how to make the defense into swiss cheese. Mike Duckett put on a show on defense…watch out for this dude come next year. Gangrene closed it out at 11-2 to complete their run from last place to Chumpions and, as Phil reminded me afterwards, the only win in league against the Champions. It was awesome to watch the team develop over the course of the summer, especially as David, Ryan and Mark (who excitedly received his first ever official disc) developed into solid contributors! Gangrene showed a lot of heart and never gave up, getting better with every game. It was a privilege to serve as their captains!

Robert and Cynthia

Percentages
By: Jack Skunk

Beyond the shadow of a doubt, this has been one of the most intriguing leagues in the history of Gainesville. The list of surprises is not short. For example, who would have bet a single dime that Red would wind up in the 9/10 game? Or, what about Royal having its only loss to Forest- the 10th seed at the time?

To honor those slim chance oddities, I’m going to play a little game called “Percentages” with my good friend Mr. Gainesville. He’s elected to remain anonymous, because unlike myself, people still like him. Now, on to the game:

What is the percentage of Orange winning all of League?

Jack Skunk: Now look: I’ve been rough on Kek in the past, but there’s no getting around it: Tang is good, Tang is for real, and with only one loss by 1 point, there is no question that these guys have an extremely good chance of winning it all. They’re a well oiled, well managed machine, with outstanding ladies (like my new crush Nicole), so I like their chances. Still- they can’t take White for granted, and if they play Royal in the finals, then it’s going to be tough. So, it’s pretty clear to me that they have a 50% chance of bringing home the bacon.

Mr. Gainesville: Now see, Skunk? You’re over correcting. 50% is way too high. Sure, they’ve had one loss on universe, but they’ve had two wins on universe as well- against two teams they should have crushed, including the emotionally wrecked All My Best Friends of Maroon, and a White team that (if I recall correctly) only had one woman. I’m kind of thinking that it’s a 50% shot if they get passed White. So, I’ll take the easy way out and call it 30%. Orange should beat White, but it’s not a given.

What is the percentage of the 9/10 game happening?

Jack Skunk: There’s no reason to waste too much time on this one. What’s the difference between being declared the 9th or 10th place team in league? Not much. I am extremely confident that this game won’t happen, but I’ve been surprised before, so I’ll call this one 3%.

Mr. Gainesville: 3%?! Try ZERO percent. Maroon might show up, but there’s no way that Red will- unless they’re coming for the beer. I think even the Lieutenant said he wouldn’t play in that game.

What is the percentage for Gold’s chances of making it to the Finals?

Jack Skunk: Pilgrim’s Know Expectations is a big reason why I’m playing this game. Their chances of beating Red, I would have said without a moment’s hesitation, was zero, nada, zip! Of course, I was wrong, and Gold is clearly much better than what anyone thought. The problem, however, for Pilgrim and Joel and the rest of them is that they’re going against the Showkiller himself, and he rarely ever loses a Semis game. Plus, they’re a focused, well organized team, who by the way- will settle nothing for nothing short of total and complete victory. Forgive me for saying this, Pilgrim, but Know Expectations has a 0.25% chance of winning. That’s a quarter of a percent, NOT 25.

Mr. Gainesville: You see, I saw Gold’s game against Red, or at least, the last 6 or 7 points. Joel- without a doubt- is one of the premier players in league, and how many game winners from Joel were dropped? 3 or 4, right? If that had not happened, then they win 15-11. I like this Gold team, I like it’s athleticism, and it looks like they’ve been firing on all cylinders. Still, Royal is a monster, so I’ll say that Gold has a 10% chance of making the Finals, and then 9% of winning it all.

The percentage of Forest winning the Chump bracket:

Mr. Gainesville: Now, of course, we’d be remiss to ignore the chump bracket. Robert and Cynthia’s Gang finally started to click at the end of the season by beating Royal and then giving Orange a run for its money during Q2. In front of them though, they have Black and then, presumably, Navy. And yet- like Skunk- I’ve always kind of liked this roster. So, I’ll go out on a limb and say they have a 30% of winning some hardware.

Jack Skunk: I love Mr. Gainesville, but sometimes he’s delusional. Do you remember what Forest’s regular season record was? 1-8, and there’s no way to sweep that under the carpet. 4-5 might be bad luck, 3-6 might be a few absences, but 1-8 means that there was something wrong. Oh- and make no mistake, if Navy is all there, then they easily win it all. So, at best, Forest has a 12% chance, and that’s only if a miracle happens.

The percentage of Orange and Royal meeting in the finals:

Mr. Gainesville: If I were betting actual money on the championship bracket, it would be on one of these two teams. Now, I do like Gold, but I just don’t see them getting through Royal. White, on the other hand, might have a chance of upsetting Orange. It looks like they’ll have Palmer, Meg, and Evan, so they have a chance. So- based on that, I’ll say that there is a 40% chance.

Jack Skunk: There is an 80% chance that there will an Orange and Blue Final, and here’s why: these are THE best two teams in League. It is a given that Royal will take out Gold, and a very high probability that the Lieutenant will choke- yet again- as the pressure mounts. But you know, it’s not even that: it’s just, quite simply, that these are two extremely good teams that will take care of business and make it to the final dance of the season.

Jack Skunk: Ok everyone, that’s it. I’ll be back on Thursday (by myself) to give you the last predictions of the season. Before I go, here’s a quick recap of the percentages:

15-14 – Gold over Red
15-5 – Royal over Silver
15-10 – Black over Navy
15-9 – White over Maroon

Captain Reviews:

Navy (Navy Jones’ Locker) vs. Black (Night Night Time)

I was really worried that this was gonna be a bad day for us. 15 out of 21 voters thought Navy was going to win this game. Skunk predicted a Navy victory by 7. I (at the advice of Sebastian) ate Taco Bell about an hour before the game. I thought that maybe we were boned. But I came to find out that Dan would be missing Cathy, Fro Joe, and Evan Donahue.

We started off really hot. We pulled first. The wind was blowing, so we went zone. The wind, combined with our aggressive D, combined with a few unfortunate Navy drops, put us up 3-0 to start. We took half 8-5. In the second, both teams were riddled with drops, but momentum pretty much continued in our favor, and we sealed the deal, 15-10.

Tanya Lopez was big for Navy, finding the holes in the middle of our zone all day. Our best players were Scott Huffard and Rob Wright– those two dudes must have had ten scores between them.

We’ve beaten Navy twice, but both times, they’ve been missing some pretty key players. I’ll be pulling for Silver next week, since, if we can get past Forest, I do not want to have to play Navy in the chump finals when they’re at full strength.

Final Score: 15-10 Black.

Lee

White v Maroon

For the first time in weeks, I was confident walking into a game. I was hopeful that Meg would be back and healthy, and I knew I’d have a strong complement of dudes, with Evan fresh off of a cross-country flight with barely any sleep and Eric making a timely return. This was actually a big game, since the loser was destined for the 9/10 game.

Unfortunately for Maroon, they were really thin, with TJ only having six of his best friends on hand. Unsurprisingly, we got a couple of breaks early on, and took half, 8-5. We then received the pull and scored again, getting a nice 4 point lead. TJ, though, as always, proved that he was dangerous and narrowed the gap to 9-7. After that, it was all White, and we took it 15-9.

For Maroon, Jenna and JoJo were fantastic, as were all of the guys, with Josh and TJ both playing great. I vaguely remember declaring that Alek was a mortal enemy. Maybe because he stepped on Liz? “Rue the day” might have been involved with that sentence. I’m not sure- Friday was a long time ago.

Plus- and this is just for historical purposes- but we got help from other teams and managed to make the champ division. We’ll try to make some noise, but don’t put any money on us.

-Mike

Royal (Whiskey Discs) vs Silver (Ag)

Two minutes after the game ended last week I was the only Royal left in the park. This led to a whole different energy coming into the game this week. We were all fired up and ready for action with a near full squad. Unfortunately, for Silver they were walking into a buzz saw because prisoners were not being taken.

After plundering Silver to take the first 4 points, Silver made the smart choice and called a timeout to go ahead and open the cooler of beer up and start drinking. This led to them getting on the board to make it 4-1. Silver was running a Dustin-less zone against us which made things much easier and we were able to connect on our swings and our popping was on target which led to us taking half 8-3. We continued raping Silver until we were sure they were dead and it ended on a great pull and us running down hard Matt put up a disc and Sunshine grabs it for his first career Callahan!

MVP’s

Silver – I just have to say that Ben is a monster with a great left hand and I love the way he plays the game. Deanna has always been a hero of mine, but she was making big cuts and nice throws all game!

Royal – Mr. Sunshine himself with his first CALLAHAN!

See ya next week!

Phil

Orange vs. Forest

Orange and Forest had opposite attendance problems this week, with Forest fielding Cynthia as their lone lady but having a bevy of men on the sideline, and Orange having all three ladies but zero male subs when playing a 6-1 lineup. This led to Orange playing up nearly every offensive point. Although having an extra woman on the field certainly helped us score easier on offense, we struggled a bit on defense. Forest played great against our trap zone and our clam. They often worked the disc up the field easily, and Orange couldn’t capitalize on any turnovers we did get. Forest took half 8-6, and Orange took a break by the Tang cooler (generously provided once again by the legendarypossiblemvp Dan Khan) to regroup. The sugary stuff must have worked its magic, because in the second half we managed to break Forest to tie it up, and from there we kept the momentum going in our direction. Final score was 15-11 or 12.

Highlights:
Forest: Cynthia and Robert handled well through our zone, being aggravatingly patient and consistently making smart decisions. It also seemed like every other time you turned around, Robert Kern or Higgins was skying someone in the endzone for a score.

Orange:
Brendan had a few nice endzone grabs of his own, and Kevin had two layout D’s to help swing the game in our direction in the second half (and was just a hair away from a third)! Kuhse played outstanding defense all game, putting pressure on their handlers in the clam, and best of all catching a Callahan!

(Unofficial Co) Captains Report from Erica

Orange vs. Forest

Tang and Gangrene took the field this Friday evening and knew it was sure to be a good game. Both teams had speedy young runners and patient handlers. Throughout the game Tang and Gangrene took points on serve with a break every now and then, but staying pretty even. On offense, Tang chose to have two of their three girls out on the field, playing one up on Gangrene. Even with the numbers handicap, Gangrene managed to contain Tang’s offense for most of the game running a 2-3-1 zone with an active middle and running markers in the front and managed to take half up a break 8-6. Tang put up a good showing with Kevin popping in the middle and his three supporting handlers for the most part, Dan, Roshan, and Travis swinging it in the back. However, Gangrene also had a sweet offense going with handler Robert Love hucking some nice throws to a very tall, skying-everybody Rob Kern and an always getting-big Greg. Shawn Higgins had some sweet hucks and superb D’s in the zone while Andy and Alan provided great popping in the middle. Runners Mark and Michael were great in the front of Gangrene’s zone and kept Tang contained in the middle of the game. Tang managed to finally start breaking it up the line on Gangrene and this led to them scoring multiple times in a row toward the end, bringing the game to 14-11. Gangrene fought hard and scored once more, but just could not overcome some turns close to the end zone. In the end Tang won 15-12.
