Fall League 2018: Who Won The Draft – by Rascal
McGrane. It’s been a long time since someone uttered the words “McGrane won the draft”. The pick of Adam was obvious (won a championship the last 2 times he played league). Nick’s best choices were surrounding him with experienced players. Yanuck is a great pick because he can run the offense if Adam wants to go downfield and cut. The only way Nick’s bubble bursts is if Weird makes Nationals and Adam misses an extended period of time.
Hartzog. Regardless if he misses the playoffs, the value pick of the draft was Nguy in round 5. In this draft he should have been early round two at the latest. I see some terrifying zone in their future. How about Ryan, KJ and Falk in the cup. I think Florida United tried something similar. This is a super experienced team who shouldn’t turn over the disc. My only worry is a lack of speed at some positions. Oh yeah, and they have that guy who had the best Callahan video of 2018.
Layton. It is the usual Layton team. Top heavy, a few raw athletes and a bunch of guys who are pretty anonymous. Fleming distributing the disc to Layton and Dixon sounds appealing and the Fresca / Morris combo just won a championship. The Kostamo pick at 4 is odd but this team will be relevant come playoff time.
Challenging for the A Bracket
Queen / Pohl. I like the athleticism top to bottom and I like their entire group of ladies. Alex Janelle is starting to get really good but I have worries about their handling corp. Against really stout defense can Janelle and Queen take care of business or will they be dependent on Goetz to be Superman. This team is pretty interesting if they can devise a strategy to out run their opponents.
DDP. DDP alone can will an average team to a championship. The Lovelace pick at 3 is outstanding but I just don’t see any other real value picks on their board. Their ladies are experienced but will be giving up a lot of speed. DDP can only poach so much to compensate for bad matchups. I imagine DDP, Jill and Kellie will coach this team up and challenge for the A bracket but when it comes down to brass tax they are just missing some firepower.
At Least They Will Have Fun
Rose. Steady but not exciting. Colverson is the perfect number 2 handler but where is their number 1? You can only squeeze so much out of Tori before defenses adapt to try and shut her down. I see plenty of ill advised hucks from Rose to Logan in their future. What we do know is that Rose will bring the blender on wheels, drinks will flow and they will be the most fun team at League.
Let’s Wait and See
Bowlin. Adub hucking to Hayden should terrify league. It does. Also, Adub has good rapport with Jay. However this team could end up being a train wreck depending on how Bowlin manages team chemistry. KBO and Adub didn’t work last winter. Maybe this time ?
Winter League is Only 4 Months Away
Barker. The most athletic team in League. Kudos. However, this isn’t a track meet. Mr. Barker is going to learn a very valuable lesson during the first windy day in October. No handlers equals a one way ticket to the B bracket.
Ken. Switzer, TK, Held and Nan. Enough said. Troy Bryant was a good value pick at 4 and the Switzer children get better every season but this has dumpster fire written all over it.
Greathouse. Greathouse drafted many of his staples: Bailey, Skool, Mills, but is Fletcher’s knee in tough shape? Regardless of Fletcher’s health and Asa awesomeness this team seems destined to be one of Greahouse’s mediocre crews. They will tease us by knocking off a really good team once or twice during the season but over the long haul they will disappoint.
