Who Won The Draft: Winter League 2019
Well here we are again. Another season, another “Stop Greathouse”. Fortunately, that should be pretty easy this season. In case you haven’t seen it, the draft board is here –>
Sky hates to see it, but Schimmel has actually drafted a good team, and not just because he says so. The combination of Adam Carr and KJ is going to be tough for other teams to match, and they’re strong all the way down. Getting Danielle where they did was a huge boon and adds a ton of defensive and deep threat power to their game. Look for this team to win it all.
Damn, this team looks good. Might be better than white. Can you ever go wrong with the DDP pick? Combine that with the throwing prowess of Fleming as the third pick, Grillon’s increasingly athletic process and capabilities, and the up-and-coming powerhouse of Brielle and you’re looking at a potentially dominant force. Of course, their trio of pick high schoolers could go a long way towards countering all that experience, but with DDP at the helm they should be a very strong contender.
Sky recalls this team basically existing before – Alek thinks that he can leverage/control Switzer into a downfield position and actually make it work. The wildcard here is Evan O’Neill, who first made his appearance last season and has already been bumped up to a third rounder.
Harley as the 8th lady overall is an absolute steal – as long as she and Mark are going to be there for the game, this team is powerful. The wily top four make this a potent combination, although Sky doesn’t really see a deep thrower OR deep treat receiver on this team. Maybe they won’t even bother to play that style and will just run the unders all season long? Sky is curious to see what develops here.
Stillson was a great pick for this time – and may mark the single biggest jump ever in the history of gainesville ultimate. 7th rounder last season to 1st this! That said, this team is relying on their veterans (Ben, Milan) who have been MIA from the league scene for a while to deliver the disc – we’ll have to see if these old dogs still have their tricks.
This team doesn’t really have a vital flaw, but nor does it have a compelling combination of threats. The wily nature of the top three could pose a threat, but that can be countered and there’s plenty of teams in the rest of the lineup that can match up well enough to shut it down. Look for a middling performance.
At the draft, a phrase was coined. That phrase was “no throwers in sight”. And it was repeated every time this team made a pick. And it is perfectly accurate. Exactly who is going to throw deep to Logan, Nick, Tori, Fleury, etc? Maybe Kiker can deliver some laser flicks that Tori can dive out of bounds for. Sky sees this team finishing at the bottom of the pack due to inability to work the disc short and Nick feeling like he has to incessantly crowd the disc.
Now, we all know Forest isn’t going to finish 8th. They’re too dangerous. Greathouse has taken on the role of the “Mad Chemist” and done what has infrequently been done before.
That said, expect this team to explode at the slightest infraction. If any one of their players has a turnovers, there will be a mass “sigh” and an absolute lack of defense. The lack of defense will feel like a stimulation isolation chamber. Other teams will get confused and lost and disoriented. And that is Forest’s plan this season.
