It’s week 6 and we’re still going out there working on things.  It’s been a process all season long, but we’re coming out and inching our way along.

    Game 1 vs. Frosted Flicks.

If there ever was a game where we could shoot ourselves in the foot this was it.  We made mistakes and White capitalized.  Also, Nick Stuart is all grown up and jumping 12 feet in the air to catch the ugliest throws.  Don’t reward them!  Game never got too out of hand but our mistakes with the wet disc didn’t help our cause.  You know it’s bad when Gettino is hucking the disc for scores. Also, a shout out to the supporting players for White.  Emily Witt, Chris Kirchman, Alex Fox, and Duckett.  White steals it 11-8.

    Game 2 vs. Unprotected Hucking

If anything could go wrong today it was.  I can’t think of anything worse than losing to Yozgat and Pip on the same day.  Still that was what we were facing with Royal throwing hammers over the top all day long from Ben Bobroff and Lee Bowman.  Then the injury bug came biting hardcore.  Yeah he doesn’t mess around sometimes.  I take out Allen Lu with a stall 9 punt.  Sorry boss!  Then Smock and Held collide going for a disc up the middle and Held leaves with a concussion… Justin let us know you’re alive!  Game goes on Fletch is doing some serious damage catching hammers, throwing hammers, and the general likes.  Gardiner is handling like a pro even got off a deep backhand.  LIsa was catching everything in sight.  Alex made a diving grab in the endzone to put us up 2 and during the next point the hardcap horn blew so final was 10-9.

No games next week so see you in 2 for the final regular season games!

    Stay Fresh,
    Phil

    Vegas over Purple 9-8
I was very excited for our match against undefeated purple.  Purple had the disadvantage of playing basically savage but everyone that they had on the field are really, really good players.  We jumped out to a 5-3 lead and were anxious to take a nice half time lead.  Unfortunately, Purple had other plans and tied it up 5-5.  We were fortunate to take half after a long DDP huck to the ever improving Jay.  We received the second half pull, scored and had a 7-5 lead at soft cap.  We scored to make it 8-5 and most teams would have just coughed it up and conceded the win to us but not Purple.  When it was 8-5 Purple upped the intensity and it seemed there was a diving Terza contesting every disc.  Fortunately we had a 9-7 lead at hard cap and the game ended with a 9-8 Vegas victory.  The Terza as always were awesome and I was very impressed by Bennett.   I had no idea he had such good skills as a handler.

    Vegas over Black 9-7
Unfortunately, as often happens after a big win, we came out pretty flat in the first half against Black and they jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  We battled back to trail 4-3 when one of the absolute longest points in the history of league unfolded.  Each team must have had at least 7 opportunities with the disc.  We survived the point of attrition and tied it up 4-4.  Black, led by the screaming and chanting Dan Khan held sway and took half 6-5.  We received the second half pull and after a turnover by each squad we tied the game 6-6 and soon after the soft cap horn blew.  We caused a break and took a 7-6 lead.  The next point had controversy regarding a side line end zone call.  Liz and DDP were adamant the Always Angry player was out of bounds but somehow Black ended up with the disc at the goal line corner cone.  The disc was tapped in and Liz kept a great mark and forced a floaty flick to the corner which we were able to D.  The score progressed to 8-7 and it seemed we snatched victory but another sideline issue arose regarding an end zone catch by Shane.  I was on the far sideline and didn’t see that one either but somehow we got the short end of that call as well.  Black regained the disc but our tenacious man D forced a quick turn which resulted in a pass from Richard to Hayden in the end zone to finish off the game.  Black is a very good team and could easily be 5-4 and not 2-7 if a few bounces had gone their way during the season.  Shout out to Andrew Ragsdale who played a nice game cutting and helping Black move the disc.

    • Ddjj62

I was close to the call concerning the Always Angry player at the goal line.  I did not hear anyone say Tiffany was out of bounds.  It wasn’t even close.  She was 5 feet or more from the sideline.  The issue was whether or not she had scored.  She, after some discussion, agreed to give up the score and play the disc from the line.  It was not a situation where Vegas “got the short end of the call”.

      • Falk

No worries, the players on the field at the time seemed to work it out in an equitable fashion – whether it was a sideline or end zone line issue.  It just looked like a corner cone call from all the way across the field.

        • Ddjj62

Overall, it was a great game.  Well played and a lot of fun.

    • Fun Fact

Also when you played purple didnt they play you 4 guys 3 girls the entire game? Just thought that should have been mentioned somewhere.

False Skydols (Carolina) over Bro Tip (Navy)  - Forfeit
False Skydols (Carolina) over Frosted Flicks (White) – 11-10

This season has tested the mettle and Frisbee fortitude of each of us.  A slew of absences contributed to our slow start and poor leadership on my part kept us from developing the teamwork and mental toughness needed to overcome deficits and maintain intensity while ahead.  And yet, even after suffering through an 0-7 start, including 2 losses on universe, the Skydols came to the fields to face down White and the future of Ultimate unflinching and unwavering and hell-bent on winning.  We all fueled each other and we able to capture that intensity and excitement that has been missing much of the season.  This was by no means a perfect game on our part, but a wall that had been holding us back fell like a Jenga tower on a palsy patient’s turn.  After scrimmaging with Joshua, Bill and Matt from Navy (the rest of the team went AWOL), it was clear to me that we were working together at a higher level than we had all season.  Thomas was anticipating throws from Switzer and Corey and using his body to box out defenders like he was old school Shaq under the rim.  Bobek was letting his hammers fly.  Shaun was breaking deep or cutting under as the disc was being thrown to me.  Little things we have been preaching but have not shown in our games were clicking and our offense flowed.  We were ready.

Game 2 began with us receiving the pull and we traded points for most of the half.   We lost a break early but Bobek helped us regain it by slapping down a huck.  Denyce, Maureen and Jess were our key contributors on offense as White was forced to play 5-1 on their defensive lines.  The ladies pressed their advantage and each one of them found the endzone as White struggled to find a way to minimize their impact.  That said, on offense White was moving the disc very well and had no problem shredding our short-lived zone.  Also, the jump-balls to Nic Stuart Little are impossible to defend.  Hats off to Corey for taking on that responsibility and definitely inconveniencing Nic as he put on a skying clinic.    At 5-5 we needed a boost and our rookie Shaun went deep with a defender right on him and brought down a full field huck from K-Swiss to close out half 6-5.  We started on defense in the second half and got 2 breaks immediately.   Switzer chucked a bomb to Corey who came down with the disc amidst Nic and Chris Lemons to make it 8-5.  But then things started to turn, despite some nifty footwork good catches by Jess, White went on a 5-2 run and tied it at 10s.  We were receiving our ladies marched it all the way down the field, but a small miscommunication resulted in a turn at the White goal line.  Undetered, every Skydol stuck to their man as tightly as possible and didn’t allow anything down field.  Then jumped into the throwing lane of the White dump pass and closed the game out with a Callahan.  Skydols win 11-10.

My brother was in town this weekend and watched our game and suggested that a Callahan to win a game on universe point should have a special name.  He suggested the “Dirty Harry”, and I hope there are at least a few old Eastwood fans out there who can appreciate the reference.

On White I would like to give a shout-out to Chris Lemons, who dove and caught a disc that I had swatted out of the air, and to Michael Duckett who was all over the place and had some great D’s.  The Carolina MVP honors go to all of the ladies, whose constant involvement in the offense repeatedly turned the game in our favor.  Great game to everyone.  See you all in 2 weeks!

Have the league organizers ever considered having the captains of each team write a brief report about the games from their perspective?  It occurs to me that people might like to read them.  This section seems like a place to put them.

Pulp Flicktion vs The Australian Strategy

I had this game circled on my calender since the draft. I had made an agreement with Greathouse that if either of us scored on the other we could “excessively celebrate” with no repercussions. Unfortunately that never happened. This game was a battle. We traded points and ended up taking half 6-4 I believe. Coming out of the half we pulled the lead up to 9-6. We thought this game was over but maroon didn’t get the message. It seems like a minute went by and then it was tied up 9-9. We were able to escape with the win 11-9. Not sure why this team is ranked 12th.

    MVPs

Maroon: Alek was a beast all game, his handling skills have come a long way. Travis was the center piece and kept them in it all game.

Pulp Flicktion: Sean took his dads place in our zone and did a fantastic job. Rob and Dan were relentless on defense. Nan and Alicia not only played well but helped our newer ladies from the sidelines.

    Pulp Flicktion vs Red

Today felt like a reunion of Undertow from summer 2010 with Greathouse and then Tran. I think we went 2-9 that season. How far we have come huh boys? Scott’s team came ready to play but they only brought 1 lady which was really disappointing only because we had all 4 of our ladies. There were a lot of long points this game with both team getting turnovers. Red managed to break us twice even with us playing up a man. I cant remember the halftime score but the score was 9-7 orange when the hard cap went off. Both team agreed to let red get a Callahan to finish the game 9-8.

    MVPs

Red: Reds only lady, and I am so sorry I dont know her name, was incredible. Not only did she play savage the entire game but she was running hard and popping like crazy. Oh and she had a SICK layout!!!

Pulp Flicktion: Tom was crucial on offense this game. Will and Zach ran the show for us and we couldn’t have won without them.

SIlver over black (On universe 10-9)

We thought we were only going to have 1 game today, because we heard that Navy (our 2nd game) was missing at least 6 players.  So its game time and we only have 5 people.  We decide to start on offense and the strategy works out perfect.  We march down the field easily 5 on 7 and go up 1-0.  By this time Huseyin was at the fields and ready to play some D.  Amanda was there too, but instead of running on to the field to give us 7, she walked over as SLOWLY as possible.  So, we go out there 6 on 7 and get scored on.  Then things start going wrong and we go down 3-1 (maybe 4-1?).  We calm down and black takes half 6-5  I think.  I’m pretty sure we come out and dominate and go up 7-5 or 7-6 or something.  I was going to bring a pencil and paper, but it was wet, so I have to write this on pure, terrible memory.

So we come out in the 2nd half and try hard and eventually win on universe.  It was scary/exciting.  GG.  Shoutout all our ladies and all their ladies

    H&S 8 Unprotected Hucking 11

When the game started we had 8 guys and no ladies so we played the first couple of points with 6 guys.  Luckily for us, royal only played one lady on offense allowing us to still play 6 on defense.  I know we got broken to begin the game and were down couple of points when MoMo showed up.  Lee and Allen were able to blade, hammer, and cut through our 6 person zone relatively easily to lead royal to the win.  I don’t remember any crazy highlights from this game.

    H&S 8 Pulp Fliction 9
This game started like the first with us getting broken.  There’s probably a correlation between first points breaks and winning percentage.  Lyle do some stats here.  I honestly thought we were going to get blown out this game.  Orange went up a break or two but we were still able to keep it close.  We had pretty good success swinging the disc up the field against their zone but missed a couple of opportunities to score once we got near our goal line.  Our offensive flow seemed to be much better this week compared to last but we always found ourselves down early.    Hard cap goes off with Orange up 9-7 and Anthony ends the game and exits SL2012 with a Callahan.

    Here’s White’s report:

    White over Forest 11-8

We played hard man d every point which forced a ton of turns. Patrick, Duckett, and Nick over matched their best 3 players and then the rest of us did a great job of not getting beat for a score.

Our offense worked so well because our vertical stack held space perfectly throughout the game. We simply just had fewer turnovers than forest.

    Carolina over White 11-10

We played down a girl the entire game which was harder than we thought. We traded until 5′s, I think, and then Carolina broke us for half (this might have been when I got skyed). We came out of half like the white of old: chaotic. We had cutters cutting so far in they were behind the dumps sometimes (which.. I don’t even.. w/e). Carolina went on a 3-1 run to bring the game to 9-6 them. We then went on a 3-0 run, trade to 10′s, and then universe happened. Carolina receives the pull and Mrs. Switzer ends up missing a huck to a wide open, streaking Mr. Switzer. We try to work it up field but had a non handler in the handle space so the stall got high and a last ditch swing pass was made but a Carolina defender intercepted it. gg.

If we have a full squad out there, we’ll win every time (unless it’s vs. Orange’s zone) but anyone else, be prepared to get dominated lol.

    Royal over Red 11-8

Red started out playing down a girl. We played them 5 v 7 for the first few points until Momo showed up with the score something like 2-1 or 3-2.  Momo was a beast going long on nice hucks from Evan. Fletcher has a good game. We win when game goes hard cap on a huck fest to Fletcher.  Cutting for my team was good

    Forest over Royal 10-9

I was pretty mad we lost this game, this was one that we should have won, as we have done so often this season we beat ourselves.  We traded points until 6-6. From here it went downhill for us. We got a turn against Forest and worked the disc to about 30 yards out. From here 2 ill-advised turnovers were thrown.  Forest being a good team, didn’t give us a 3rd chance to score and converted on our mistakes to score. We never get back in the game, they win 10-9.  This game was bad lots of injuries.  Allan Lu’s nose got messed up, and Justin Held concussed after colliding with Smock, hope he is feeling better nowPlayers of the game: Sarah Gardiner did good at handling as usual, Fletcher did a good job as usual going deep and containing their deeps, and Lisa did a good job of poppingFor forest Phil Nassoiy was good, as was Smock

  • Terza

Well it seems that attendance for us this season has become even worse than originally predicted.  Nonetheless we fight on and will, if given the chance, seek to avenge the loss experienced at the hands of Gold but a few short nights ago.

    WHAC SAC versus Purpitrators 9-8

Couple notes… I hate hard cap and Rob Brice is the worst observer ever ;)

Whether it was the rain or lack of focus or just an off night, I feel like this game could have been played at a lot higher level than it was by both teams.  Skilled players on both sides of the field.  Regardless, everyone played hard and got a lot of running in.  Gold threw some zone, but decided to make my life hell by singling a mark on me with the tenacious Shane Forrestel and later by Colby Burtt.  We had some easy score comprised of 10 to 15 yard passes straight down the field, but on other points Vegas made gaining yards extremely difficult.  DDP was given us space as deep deep but we knew better than to test his blazing cargo pants speed.  Instead we relied heavily on popping from Cathy and Daniel Smith to get us into the red zone.  Offensively Vegas moved the disc well often beating us forced side on some crucial underneaths.  Joanna had some serious layout attempts both offensively and defensively that were inches from success.  For vegas it seemed like every time I looked to see where the DDP’s flicks were going, Jiggens or Hadyn was there catching the disc. Points took too long and having gone down early we couldn’t make it back in time and got hard capped at 9-8.

    Purpitrators versus Australian Strategy 10-8

Regretfully we played the first half of this game like it didn’t matter, as if by losing one game meant that losing the next was meaningless.  Maroon made us pay for it, going up early.  We eventually found a change of heart and shifted gears.  I think we were able to take half.  The second half was hard fought. Great handling by Alek, Travis, and Austin.  As always Stargel was a menace. Things got a little dicey towards the end, but everyone kept it together and finished the game without bad blood.  10-8 for us.

grrSorry out there – no frisbee oriented deets.  Fun to see yer name in print, I know. Oh well. If you rocked some crazy skillz, passion, spirit, fashion-sense, whatever in your game against us (or with us), just know that your stellar manifestation of human glory is inscribed in the book of eternity – writ’ across the heavens for all time – but not here.

    Maroon v. Orange

This was a fairly good game, but the Z of Orange was hurting without KJ’s ultra-aggressive mark.  Orange took half and had a good lead, but we were able to close within one or so before Orange put it away.  So long ago.. can’t remember what else.

    Maroon v. Purple

We had a good lead, and then we blew it.  Basically, we kept falling for the old “oh, hey, there’s a hole in the cup” trick, which inevitably resulted in a terza getting a layout D.  We lost 11-9, and it was a touch frustrating, but not the end of the world.  I’ve gotten beat worse by lesser teams.  That’s it.  Now I can stop feeling guilty!
